Overview

The right answer for big glass and high glass

A motor is not a luxury on a two-story great room window. It is the only practical way to move the shade. The same goes for a wall of ten shades that should rise and fall together, and for the transom nobody has touched since the house was built.

We install Norman Smart Motorization on roller shades, honeycomb shades and SmartDrape, with rechargeable batteries that need no electrician. Outside, SunPro motorized screens drop down to shade a porch or patio and roll away out of sight when the weather turns nice.

Top rail
Bottom rail

Light filtering roller shade: you cannot see through it, but daylight passes through the fabric and brightens the room. Norman Smart Motorization: tap up, down or stop, the same as the remote or the app.

Try it

Run the motor

  • Tap up, stop and down. That is the whole remote.
  • Switch to the Honeycomb tab for a top down bottom up shade with a motor on each rail.
  • On the SmartDrape tab, pick Center opening to see the motorized version part in the middle.

Inside the house

What we motorize

Roller shades

The most common motorized shade. Light filtering, room darkening and solar fabrics, singly or grouped across a wall of glass.

Honeycomb shades

Motorized top down bottom up honeycomb shades put a motor on each rail, so you can open the top for light and keep the bottom closed.

SmartDrape

Motorized SmartDrape draws across a sliding door or a wall of glass from the remote or the app, and can open from the center.

Blinds

A motorized tilt turns the slats of a wood or faux wood blind without touching the wand.

Rechargeable batteries

Standard on every motor we install. One charge typically lasts months. We charge them at install and show you the charger.

Hardwired

For new construction, the builder runs low-voltage wire to each window before drywall and the motors never need charging.

Outside the house

SunPro motorized screens

Motorized exterior solar screens lowered on a covered deck with a mountain view

A covered porch is the biggest opening on many mountain homes, and from June to September it is too bright and too buggy to use for half the day. SunPro motorized screens fix that. A solar screen fabric drops down on tracks at the edge of the porch, cuts sun, heat, wind and insects, and rolls back up into a housing when you want the open view.

  • Zipper tracks hold the fabric tight in wind
  • Solar fabrics from 1% to 10% openness, or clear vinyl for winter
  • Motorized from a remote or the app, grouped with the inside shades
  • Keeps afternoon sun off the glass behind the porch

How it moves

Motorization and lift options

Every shade can be moved by hand or by a motor. You can mix them from room to room.

By hand, no cords

PrecisionLift

Norman PrecisionLift has no cord at all. Push or pull the hem bar and the shade stays exactly where you leave it. Try it in the window preview on this site.

  • Nothing dangling at the window
  • Smooth, even travel
  • Our standard lift on roller shades

Lift from the bottom rail

Cordless

Honeycomb shades and blinds lift by hand from the bottom rail. There are no cords for children or pets to reach, and nothing to wrap around a cleat.

  • Honeycomb shades and blinds
  • Top down bottom up available
  • Safer around children and pets

For windows that are awkward to reach

SmartRelease

A Norman lift system made for shades you cannot comfortably move by the hem bar. We bring a working sample to your visit so you can try it before deciding.

  • A good fit for tall windows
  • Try it in person first
  • No motor to charge

A motor without a remote

AutoWand

Norman AutoWand puts the motor controls on a slim wand that hangs from the shade. Press a button and the shade moves, with no remote to lose and no app to set up.

  • Simple motorization
  • Nothing to pair
  • Good for guest rooms and offices

Remote, app, voice and schedules

Smart Motorization

Norman Smart Motorization runs one shade or the whole house from a remote, the Norman app or a voice assistant. Schedules can lower west-facing shades in the afternoon and open the bedroom at sunrise.

  • Rechargeable battery or hardwired
  • Group a whole wall of glass into one scene
  • The answer for windows out of reach

Good to know

Details worth deciding early

Remote, app or both

Every motor comes with a remote. The Norman app adds schedules, scenes and voice control through the usual assistants. Most people use the remote for the bedroom and the app for the wall of glass.

Scenes and schedules

Group every shade in a room, or the whole house, into one button. Schedule the west-facing wall to close at three in the afternoon and open again at dusk.

Charging

A rechargeable motor charges from a small plug-in charger in about a day. We charge everything at install and leave you the charger. Most homes charge once or twice a year.

Exterior screens and weather

SunPro screens ride in zipper tracks that hold the fabric tight in wind. We size the housing and tracks to the opening and confirm the mounting surface at the measure.

The process

How it works

Three visits at most, and usually two.

  1. We come to you

We bring the samples, so you can hold fabrics and finishes up to your own walls, trim and light. We measure every window while we are there, including the ones up the ladder. The visit is free.

  2. You get a written quote

A clear price for each window, for exactly what you picked. Change it, trim it or take your time with it.

  3. We install

Your order is built to our measurements and installed by our own team. We haul away the old blinds.

Answers

Motorized and patio screens questions

Do motorized shades need an electrician?

No. Rechargeable battery motors are standard and need no wiring. Hardwired motors are an option in new construction when the builder can run low-voltage wire before drywall.

How long does the battery last?

Typically months between charges, depending on the size of the shade and how often it moves. Charging takes about a day with a plug-in charger we leave with you.

Can I control the shades from my phone?

Yes. Norman Smart Motorization works from a remote, the Norman app and voice assistants. Schedules and scenes are set in the app.

Can all the shades move together?

Yes. Any group of shades can be put on one button or one schedule, from a pair of bedroom windows to every shade in the house.

What are SunPro screens?

Motorized exterior solar screens for porches, patios and large windows. The fabric drops on tracks to block sun, heat, wind and bugs, and rolls back into a housing when you want the open view.

Can motorized shades be added to windows I already have shades on?

Sometimes. Some existing shades can take a new motor, and others are better replaced. We look at what you have during the free consultation and tell you which.
